Borg El Arab Airport is an airport located in El Alamein, Egypt. The airport is situated about 60km from Alexandria and about 90km from Cairo. It serves as a domestic airport with flights to and from Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada, Luxor, and Aswan. The airport also has an international terminal with flights to and from Istanbul, Dubai, Kuwait, and Jeddah.
The airport has one runway that is 3,048 meters long and 45 meters wide. There are two terminals at the airport; the domestic terminal and the international terminal. The domestic terminal has a capacity of 600,000 passengers per year while the international terminal can handle 1.2 million passengers per year. The airport also has a cargo terminal with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year.
The airport is operated by the Egyptian Airports Company and is currently undergoing expansion to accommodate the increasing number of passengers using the facility.
The Battle of El Alamein was fought from October 23 to November 4, 1942. It was a turning point in World War II's Western Desert Campaign. The Allies stopped the Axi's advance into Egypt and eventually forced them to retreat.
Both sides suffered heavy casualties, but the Allies were able to replace their losses much more quickly than the Axis. In addition, the Allied navies controlled the Mediterranean Sea, making it difficult for the Axis to resupply their troops in Africa.
